A Peek at our Week
As part of our morning meetings, we have been talking about gratitude. As your child, what it means to fill someone’s bucket. We also made special cards to show kindness. Encourage your child to tell you about them!
Language Arts
Students have been reading and listening to articles and text about nonfiction topics. Science A to Z allows us to differentiate texts so that each group can read or listen to the material that is just right for them. Students have access to Science A to Z at home as well. Students can log into their Raz Kids account and look for the Science planet on their dashboard.
We have also been using Epic!; a digital library. Epic has both books and videos for students. Emerging readers can also have stories read to them.
We are also practicing writing complete sentences. We tell the students that each sentence needs to have a “who” and a “do.” We have also been building silly sentences to reinforce our new skills.
Science
A big topic of conversation this week has been the lunar eclipse that occurred on Tuesday. We used this article to help us learn more -

Math
Our first grade level mathematicians worked with subtraction, crossing off to take away as well as using counters to illustrate our problems.
Our second grade level mathematicians continued working with 3 digit numbers and understanding the value of each digit by noticing if it is in the hundreds, tens or ones place.
Our third grade level mathematicians worked with rounding numbers and then subtracting or adding in order to find an estimate using story problems to guide us.
Social Studies
This week we focused on what an election is and the importance of voting. We chose 3 beanie baby candidates who each had a platform to share and we had the challenge of voting for the one we thought would make the best school president. Weenie, Stretch and Derby all had great ideas to share and several ideas, such as wearing school uniforms, that were not as popular. The children each listened to the 3 platforms of our candidates and voted using a ballot and ballot box. We had some very lively discussions about who we thought should win!
