Calling all guest readers! March is Reading Month and we're looking for guest readers. All you need is a book and to make sure your criminal background is turned in to Ms. Cindy. You just need to fill out a form and give the office a copy of your ID. I made the time slots for the end of the day because I thought it would be easier for you to just come a bit earlier to go home, but if you are hoping for a different time of day, we can make it happen too! In continuation of our mini unit on similar stories from different lands, we focused on stories about thumb-sized people. Thumbelina, Issun Boshi, and Tom Thumb were all born the size of a thumb and go on many wild adventures. These stories brought us things like a wild Oni (troll in Japanese folklore), a group of robbers, a greedy mole, and a hungry wolf. We've discussed vocabulary words like extravagance, snicker, weary, commotion, scamper, and furious. I find it amusing that that class is accepting elements of the story like wild adventures (slaying a dragon, talking to a wolf), but almost completely rejects the idea of marrying someone you just met to live happily ever after. We will see what the next round of stories brings us!
Our class worked on timelines this week. We looked at the timelines of Marvel movies (by request), the evolution of a donut, and Ms. Sarah's life. The students then took elements of their own life and organized them. Next week I hope to continue this idea.
Every week I try to read a few chapters of a book with the class. We've been sticking with Junie B. Jones, but I told the class we'd move on in the interest of time. Unfortunately, I haven't finished the Junie B. series, so there's some summer reading for you! We're moving on to a series about a magic tree house.
Things to talk about from the week:
- A classmate moving to Texas
- Building a monster trap
- Ms. Keri's last day
- Guest reader this week (someone's mom!)
