Do you know what a syllable is? A syllable is a beat in a word. The word cat is one syllable. Paper is two. Dinosaur is three syllables. We started looking at syllables this week by charting names. Next week I hope to make a list of 3, 4, and even 5 syllable words.
In our geography unit, we've started mapping our classroom and understanding the importance of a map key. The children designed their own classroom using a key to mark chairs, tables, and rugs. They also got a chance to see what the classroom used to look like a few years ago. The big world map on the wall is a great reference when we're talking about the countries our Cinderella stories are from. We've read versions from England, Alaska, Ireland, and China so far.
Our reading month is coming to an end, but if you missed out and want to come be a guest reader some time, let me know and we'd love to have you!
One quick note about report cards- For some reason the tardies and absences didn't show up at the top. If you would like a report card with the correct amount in that chart, let me know and I can check in with Cindy who can run the program again.
Things to talk about from the week:
- Doing IXL on the laptop computers
- Paper chain countdown
- Getting the room ready for kindergarten roundup
- All of the amazing jumping in gym class
