Explorers 5/12/2023

 Hello Explorer Families!

Thank you to everyone who helped us enjoy a wonderful teacher appreciation week! Our hearts are full.

We are enjoying the warmer weather and being able to be outside. It has been a great week of learning.

Summer Reading

Barnes and Noble is offering students a chance to earn free books this summer. Visit their web site to learn more.

Peak at our Week

ELA

I have been working 1:1 with students to begin our end of the year assessments. Our students are excited to see their growth in all ELA areas.

Our students have grown so much in their reading skills this year. Spring is a great time for students to read, think about, and discuss books with their peers and not just with me! I find that I learn SO much about my students when I sit back and observe their conversations and arguments about a topic without intervening. I can see the growth socially as well as academically that our students make in a year and I can see what our students still need to work on.

Science

We continue to work on our “All About” animal books.

In addition, first graders are learning that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents. For example, leaves from the same kind of plant are the same shape but can differ in size; and, a particular breed of dog looks like its parents but is not exactly.

Second grade students are examining different habitats. We will compare the diversity of life in these different habitats.

Math

Our mathematicians completed their Go Math assessment tests this week as well as our NWEA assessment.  We talked about how far we have come with our skills and how wonderful it feels to be able to solve problems that once seemed difficult.

We also reviewed our math skills using games and practice pages.  The class loves to practice their skills using dice, games such as Stacks and Pop and acting as the teacher by problem solving on the board.

Social Studies

Our first graders continued to work on creating a community map and decided on the important parts of their community such as a school, hospital and traffic lights.  The children discussed what a community needs to be successful and what types of characteristics we look for when looking for an area to make our home.

Our second graders presented their ideas and posters about the positive and negative consequences of land development in a neighborhood.  Many chose to work in small groups or with a partner, brainstorming ideas and listing them on large chart paper.  We hung the papers up on the board and each student shared their ideas with the class, even asking for questions and comments at the end of their presentation.
