Explorers - 9/16/22

 Hello Explorer Families!

The children did an amazing job completing their NWEA tests.  We will be using the information from the test to help set individual goals and to find “just right” groups for each child.

We continue to review and practice our community agreements as they develop the stamina to see tasks through to completion.

A peek at our week:

ELA

The children have been working hard in their daily 5 centers.  The children  had many opportunities to read books at their just right level.  Encourage them to read aloud to you every night.  Remember to continue to read aloud to them everyday also.

Science

Ask your child to tell you about being a scientist. Scientists observe by looking carefully, listening, touching and feeling textures, noticing changes, using measuring tools, and discussing information with other scientists.

We have also talked about the  tools scientists use. They measure size, volume, weight, temperature, appearance, and time.

The Scientific Method:

Ask a question.

Make a hypothesis.

Observe

Analyze

Share and discuss.

Math

Our math groups continue to work hard on showing their learning with various skills:

1st grade level Explorers continue to work with starting with a number and adding onto that number to form an addition equation.

Second grade level Explorers continue to work on identifying odd and even numbers.  We played a game with dice to create a number and tell whether it was odd or even.

Third grade level Explorers are working on how to round numbers to the nearest ten, using games and a rounding chart to help identify the correct answer.

Social Studies

First grade Explorers have been discussing how our families take care of us focusing on our basic needs this week.  This will be a part of a whole family book we are creating.

Second grade Explorers have been discussing what a community is and what kind of qualities we look for in a community.  Do we prefer a community close to a big city or one out in the country?  We drew illustrations of communities we would like to be a part of and explained why we would like to live there.
