Explorers - 10/7/22

 Hello Explorer Families!

We have had a great week in the Explorer rooms this week. We are enjoying the cooler weather. Our students are enjoying a variety of fall and Halloween themed books.

Reminders

The weather is getting colder, please remember to send your child with a  jacket.  We will go outside every day weather permitting.

Fall break is October 17th-21st. We hope you have a relaxing week with your child.

A Peek at our Week

ELA

We have been reading a variety of nonfiction stories. Students are learning how to use a variety of nonfiction text features such as captions, photographs, and the glossary to increase their comprehension of a topic.

Science- We are in the middle of our first units of study. Students are enjoying a  variety of hands-on activities and experiments.

Second graders are using what they know about the properties of popsicle sticks and index cards to construct buildings that will support boxes of crayons.

First graders are designing ways to use light and sound to communicate. They are also completing experiments using light and sound.

Math

Our first grade level mathematicians worked with the order of addends and how this does not change the sum/answer using cubes to form a picture model which helps to create a concrete understanding of this concept.

Our second grade level mathematicians showed how to make numbers in different ways this week including word form, place value blocks and expanded form.

Third grade level mathematicians reviewed adding 3 two digit numbers, regrouping when needed.  We worked together to use strategies such as making a group of ten in order to create an easier problem to work with.  We also are continuing our learning of how to round numbers to make an estimation.

Social Studies

Our first graders finished their family books, sharing ideas about how our families work together, eat together and take care of each other.

Our second graders did a wonderful job presenting in their groups on what makes a great community.  Our groups included buildings, businesses, ways to have fun, natural resources and transportation and each explained what they would bring to a community.  Then students were invited to ask the group questions.  It was a very lively way to share our ideas!
