Innovators - 10/7/22

 Hello Innovator Families!

In ELA, we moved our drafts into the hands of our peers and are crafting our final versions of our hero stories.

On Wednesday we welcomed Mr. Fergel Amayo from Gotham Night Comics in Livonia as our guest speaker.  His presence as a local business owner added an authentic voice to our origin story/element comic project.  He asked the students to consider the origin stories of heroes and had them seeing the hero in themselves.  The students were very encouraged.  When asked, "Who do they see as a hero?" All the volunteer responders cited a parent as their hero.  It was very moving!

In Science we tested expansion and contraction with hot and cold water.

Our Mackinac trip is a go!  Permission slips that include payment schedule, itinerary and first fundraising-chocolate bar sales- information went home on Tuesday.  Please ask your student if you need extra copies. Here is a link to make online payments: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080a45a4ab2ca4fe3-2023.  I am also keeping a spreadsheet to cross check all payments made.

In Social Studies, students finished presenting the creation theories and stories they had been researching. As we learned last month when studying how the brain learns, we learned that "Neurons that FIRE together, WIRE together!" To give our brains multiple opportunities to revisit the creation theories and stories our classmates have shared, we LISTENED and WATCHED as each classmate presented. We then DISCUSSED and SUMMARIZED what we saw and heard. Next, we worked together to craft a WRITTEN SUMMARY of each theory or story. Ask your Innovator to share their favorite creation theory or story with you, the most unusual one they've learned about, and the interesting similarities and differences we have noticed among the various theories and stories.

We have also been exploring how humans count and describe time. Students have explored a variety of calendar systems used by different groups of people throughout the world and throughout human history. This week, we focused on our current Gregorian calendar system as well as the meanings of BC, BCE, AD, and CE. Students found it surprising that not everyone in the world switched to the Gregorian calendar system at the same time.

In Math, students are working on the pre-algebra skills that comprise the 7th and 8th grade Math curricula. Students work in small groups so that they can progress at the pace that best suits their individual learning strengths and needs. As students are ready for more advanced math skills and concepts, they are provided opportunities to learn them.
