 Peek at our Week

 Language Arts
We have been enjoying holiday themed would you rather questions as part of our morning meeting. For example, “Would you rather be one of Santa’s elves or one of Santa’s reindeer?” or “Is it more fun to give a gift or to receive a gift?”

First graders are working on writing complete sentences. A complete sentence has a naming part (who or what the sentence is about) and a doing part (the action - what the naming part is doing). Students say their sentence out loud, count the words, draw 1 line for each word, write the words, and read it back.

Second graders are focusing on super sentences. They are adding information to their sentence so that the reader can gain more information about what is happening in the story. With the help of question words such as who, what, where, when, how, students expand their sentences. For example, the original sentence: The girl sat. A super sentence example would be: Jenny sat at her desk and ate her snack.

Holiday crafting has been very popular. Ask your child to tell you about the fun ornaments we designed this week. We also created paper chains, bookmarks, and with Miss Michelle’s help, a collaborative Christmas tree from smaller triangles decorated by each student.

Math

First grade level mathematicians are working with creating their own subtraction sentences and drawing pictures to subtract from 10 or less.

Second grade level mathematicians are diving into place value and determining which 3 digit number is bigger.  We are working on this skill in our books as well as rolling 3 multi-sided number dice to create the largest number possible and compare it with another player’s number.

Our third grade level mathematicians continue to work on graphing data including using and creating pictographs.  We collect data, make a graph key and fill in our data, comparing the data with each other.

Social Studies & Science

We have focused this week working on our community service project spreading the word about Mittens for Detroit and trying to reach our goal of gathering 150 pairs of new mittens and gloves for those in need.

2nd graders were excited to tell other cohorts about our mitten project.

They wrote a script and went in pairs to each homeroom.
