Explorers - 1/13/23

 Hello Explorer Families!

Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and healthy break. We loved connecting with our students and seeing their smiling faces.

Ask your child to tell you about our conversation and activities about Dr. Martin Luther King. The Henry Ford Museum has a free day on Monday in honor of Dr. King. The link below has more information.

Language Arts

Explorers have been modeling positive reading behaviors. Good readers can read books at their level with fluency and comprehension. Fluent readers read at an appropriate rate of speed for their age or grade level; when reading aloud they look ahead about 3 or more words. They also have highly automatic word recognition, and the skills to sound out unfamiliar words. Fluent readers use prosody (pitch, stress, and timing) to convey meaning when they read aloud; they “scoop up” several words at a time instead of reading word by word. They look for punctuation marks and use their voice to indicate the end of a sentence. For example, when reading a question, a reader’s voice will go up. Why is this important? In grades 3 and 4, there is a shift from learning to read to reading to learn. If reading is less effortful, there are more mental resources available for comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. Keep on reading at home!

Science

We are beginning a Science unit on Earth’s Surface. We will learn all about the important materials that make up Earth’s surface and how they affect our lives. We will also study how the earth changes over time.

Math - Our first grade level mathematicians are continuing to review addition and subtraction facts up to ten using models, pictures and mental math to solve.

Our second grade level mathematicians worked on using doubles to form an easier addition problem to solve using our dry erase boards.

Our third grade level mathematicians learned to interpret data on a bar graph, constructing their own bar graphs and adding the data.  We discussed our findings and talked about what the data means and the importance of using good data such as when asking people their favorite color, we all need to ask the same people this question.

Social Studies - Our first grade Explorers learned about producers and consumers, discussing how farmers are producers and we are consumers because we eat what they produce such as apples and vegetables.

Our second grade Explorers are learning about landforms and creating their own landform illustrated books.  This week we focused on lakes and mountains.
