Explorers - 1/27/23

Hello Explorer Families! Students LOVE getting outside and playing in the snow. Please be sure to send boots, snow pants, coat, hat, gloves/mittens. Without all of their gear, students will have recess on the blacktop. A Valentine’s Day information sheet is in your child’s take home folder. Let us know if you have any questions. Peek at our Week ELA In language arts this week, we read a variety of nonfiction books. We also used GetEpic to choose nonfiction books to read or listen to. Reading is more than just saying the words; it is interacting and thinking about the text. Ask your child which non-fiction book he or she read. Your student should also be able to tell you what information was new and interesting. Second graders have begun to stop and jot as we read to help students remember the content of the text. Research shows that students learn best when they connect new learning to previous instruction. Next week, we will practice making connections to a text. We will focus on three types of connections; text to text connection (This story reminds me of another story called ___), a text to self connection (I am like a character in a story or I am unlike a character), and text to world connection (This story reminds me of a time when ___ happened.) Science First graders are learning about how the Earth, sun, and moon work together. We are studying the patterns of day and night as well as seasonal patterns from the sun. Second graders are examining bodies of water found on earth. We are learning that water can be a solid or a liquid. Math Our first grade level mathematicians are continue work on learning how addition and subtraction are related as well as learning multiple strategies on how to subtract numbers up to ten. Our second grade level mathematicians worked with related numbers (fact families) and how to create 2 addition and 2 subtraction problems using 3 numbers. Our third grade level mathematicians worked on creating equal groups and writing a coordinating multiplication sentence/repeated addition sentence to show the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. They are so excited to learn how to multiply! Social Studies Our first graders enjoyed portions of the book The Story of Money and practiced the concepts of trade and bartering using sea shells. We had lots of fun pretending to trade for fish and other items from nature that were necessary years ago before money as we know it was a part of everyday life. Our second graders finished their landform books and will use this information for our next study into nature made and human made aspects of communities. We enjoyed having the opportunity to illustrate and describe various landforms using books, videos and various other reference materials to provide further information for our books. The children certainly love to use art supplies to show their creativity.
