Junior Explorers - 2/3/23

Valentine's Day is the 14th.  If you plan to bring in valentines, we have 19 children total.  That day we will have a special tie where those children who bring valentines will pass them out to everyone.  DOn't worry about bringing a bag to put them in.  Everything they get will go home with them so you can sort at home.

Our 100th day of school is coming up on the 10th!  I know some people like to celebrate by wearing something special that day.  For most of us it's a normal clothing day.  That day will be filled with a bunch of activities all revolving around the number 100.

Beavers, Beavers, Beavers.  In hindsight, I shouldn't have done that Gail Gibbons book right around Groundhog's day.  It did cause a lot of confusion so I'll remember that for next time.  We did get a chance to compare the two animals.  In fact, one of the nicknames for a groundhog is a land beaver!

In science we looked back at our initial thoughts on the word "motion" and started to sort each idea by true or false.  It's okay we thought those things at first.  They're called misconceptions and we can always learn new things.  We started talking about how things stay still unless it's pushed or pulled.  Here are some of our initial ideas on the meaning of "motion."

  • You can go slow motion
  • You can go fast motion
  • Happy or sad (misconception)
  • Motion is moving back and forth
  • Water can be in motion
We continued working with these ideas while I brought out a collection of simple machines.  Ms. Amy helped the kids solve simple problems using simple machines.  Pulleys, ramps, screws, etc...

Things to talk about from the week:
  • Did Phil see his shadow?
  • Junie B's new haircut
  • Sorting materials
  • The dump truck silly song
  • A groundhog for a pet
