Poetry
Our students are so proud of their poetry. We worked on two different poems this week; color poems and a bio poem. We were amazed at the expressive language the children used in their poems:
Blue is the sky.
Red tastes like a cherry.
Pink is like the frosting on a doughnut.
We hosted our third Poetry Cafe. Each student had a chance to share a poem that spoke to him or her. Ask your child how we show appreciation to an author during the Poetry Cafe.
Peek at our Week
ELA
Ask your child to tell you about the story Giraffe Problems by Jory John. We reread the story several times and completed 4 activities. When students listen to the same story multiple times, they pick up new information, dive deeper into the meaning of the book, and make connections between themselves and the book — as well as between the book and other books they've heard. Newly independent readers need lots of practice to get past the word by word choppy reading into fluent reading. When a child chooses to read a favorite book over and over again, he or she is getting lots of practice to build fluency.
Math
Our first grade level mathematicians continue to strengthen their subtraction skills. They are becoming more independent and are able to complete assignments on their own at this point, asking for help when needed and/or using a number chart.
Our second grade level mathematicians continue their work with renaming when subtracting 2 digit numbers. This is a skill that requires a lot of practice. We are using a fun variety of worksheets, games and “being the teacher” on the whiteboard to work through the steps needed to problem solve.
Our third grade level mathematicians were excited to work on a pre-algebra type lesson which asked them to solve for the unknown number. We are using our multiplication strategies to problem solve and often found that having a quick discussion was the best way to solve a problem.
