I started the idea of taking care of earth this week by pretending to be Earth. I talked about the amazing things that. happen on my surface like streams, plants growing, and the sounds of children laughing. I meant to get more into ways to protect it from garbage and the affect on the environment, but our Wednesday and Thursday got sidetracked a bit.
The potential storm on Wednesday sent the children into a slight tizzy, so we spent the day discussing tornados and how they form, what they can do, and how to stay safe. I had planned on starting the severe weather discussions a bit later in the unit, but we got a head start that day. We looked at many weather maps to watch for storms and noticed a place called Tornado Alley. Thankfully the rain wasn't too bad that day!
We had some mini discussions on butterflies and caterpillars as we will later track their flight patterns on a map of the United States. I introduced a globe and we made a comparison with maps.
I just wanted to reiterate two events that are happening- just in case you skip the whole school information. April 11th is Curriculum Night. Come and fill out a passport as you travel each room and learn more about what we do here. May 11th is The Spring Fling. This is a big banquet with raffles, prizes, dinner, dancing, and more! I will eventually be asking for donations for a themed raffle basket I will put together for the event.
Things to talk about from the week:
- Freeze clean-up song on the record player
- Piggie and Gerald scenes
- Caterpillars hanging- in real life and in the classroom!
