Explorers - 9/30/22

 Hello Explorer Families!

Parent Volunteer Needed!

Each homeroom needs to decorate a pumpkin for Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 14th. We would like to be able to offer the students a chance to brainstorm ideas to decorate the pumpkin on Thursday, October 6th from 2:00 to 3:00. If you are feeling crafty and would enjoy working with our Explorers, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher. Supplies and materials will be available at school. Just bring your excitement!

Parent Reminders

Please continue to send your child to school with water to drink. Staying hydrated is very important for healthy bodies to learn and grow!

Please label all of your child’s belongings. This will help us get them back to you.

A Peek at our Week

ELA

We are working on writing in full complete sentences. We are also using capital letters to begin sentences and punctuation at the end of the sentence.  Partner reading is a new favorite activity at the end of the day. This allows students to practice reading fluency skills. It would be a fun activity to try at home.

Science

First graders are learning about sound and light. Ask your child about our science vocabulary words; vibration, sound wave, and volume (how loud or quiet a sound is).

Second graders are learning about the properties of matter. Properties are things such as size, texture, color, volume, smell that scientists can observe and measure. We have investigated and described properties of solids, liquids, and gasses. Students are learning to classify matter based on its observable properties.

Math

Our first grade level mathematicians are making models with counters to solve addition equations.

Our second grade level mathematicians are continuing with place value and learning about expanded form/how to separate the tens and ones in a number and understand the value of that digit.

Our third grade level mathematicians are continuing to learn about rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred and using games to strengthen their learning.

Social Studies -

Our first grade explorers talked about the many ways our families show us that they love us including comforting us when we feel afraid and scratching our back to help us fall asleep.

Our second graders presented their ideas on how to create the ideal community.  The students chose a group to work in, such as the building group and places to have fun group, thought about what they would like to add to the ideal community and presented their ideas to the class.

We  offer a Fun Friday choice in the afternoon. The activity will vary from week to week. Activities in the past have included extra recess, art activities, and dance parties. Children who needed to finish up work for the week will be given the opportunity to do so before joining in with the Fun Friday activity.

As a reminder students who have received a good choices form throughout the week will not participate in Fun Friday (They will be given an alternative assignment if their work is up to date).

A few photos from our assembly on Monday. Ask your student to tell you about sharing kindness and be respectful.
