Explorers - 12/9/22

Hello Explorer Families!

We continue to collect gloves and mittens for Mittens of Detroit. Thank you for your support.

 Language Arts

In addition to reading stories, students are developing strategies to identify unknown or tricky words. Instead of teaching rhymes such as “two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking,” students are looking at word chunks. For example, if a student knows “ump”, he or she can also read grump, dump, or plump. As students progress as readers, they also learn to identify prefixes and suffixes. This begins with adding s to the end of a word. At a more complex level, students taught how words are made up of word parts, and how words can be related in word families, such as the word family for the Latin root port (to carry) - report, import, support etc.

 Science

First graders are investigating and sorting materials that are transparent, translucent, and opaque.

Second graders are enjoying a variety of building challenges that encourage them to work collaboratively with their tablemates.

 Math

Our first grade level mathematicians continue to strengthen their subtraction skills working with how to solve a problem when subtracting zero as well as using picture cues and cubes to subtract.

Our second grade level mathematicians worked with place value riddles this week. They listened to find the information they needed, wrote down the information and solved the problem to find the number that was less than or greater than.

Our third grade level students are working with pictographs, using information to read a pictograph as well as gathering information to make one of their own.

 Social Studies

Our first grade Explorers are working with goods and services. They are designing a business and will share with the group if their business creates goods or provides a service.

Our second grade Explorers are reviewing cardinal directions and basic mapping skills such as determining land and water on a map as well as learning to read a map key.

 PBL

We were so excited this week to have our second grade Explorers travel to the classrooms at school to read the script we wrote last week promoting our community service project. We also made posters and decorated mittens to help spread the word! Can you help us reach our goal of collecting 150 pairs of gloves and mittens?

Making a leaf house!
