Hello Explorer Families!
Please remember to turn in your child’s permission slips. We are excited to walk to Rotary Park and learn how to make energy absorbers with the assistance of an auto engineer.
ELA
As we approach the end of the year, we are reviewing material taught earlier this year. Ask your child how to play Boom, Clap, Snatch or The First Letter/Last Letter game.
Much of this week has been spent completing NWEA testing and starting 1:1 reading with Miss Debbie. Students are showing us what they have learned. They are proud of their new skills. We have also been reflecting on our learning - students love looking in their writing books to see what they did at the beginning of the year and what they can do now. We will send all of their writing books home at the end of the year.
Science
Speaking of writing, students are finishing up their “All About” books. Each student is learning more about an animal. Ask your child to tell you more about his/her project.
Math
Our first grade level mathematicians continued working with subtraction strategies to find which strategy works best for them. Discussing the problems and the steps involved in solving them, help our students understand the process of solving and to decide which method of solving works for them.
Our second and third grade level mathematicians enjoyed exploring the world of geometry this week. We discussed the difference between plane and solid figures, went on scavenger hunts looking for certain shapes in the “real world” and played the game Guess My Shape!
Social Studies
Our first graders constructed their community maps, adding buildings and natural aspects that they think are the most interesting and important in a place they would like to live.
Our second graders continued our discussion on positive and negative consequences of land development using a story, The Little House, that dramatically changed when land developers decided to change the landscape of the countryside. It was interesting to talk about how these changes were positive for some but negative for others.
